Using a PTP connection |

PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) is a standard Windows protocol for devices to transfer images to the computer. Almost every modern day camera supports PTP. The biggest advantage of PTP is that it standardizes the output, so drivers and other camera-specific software are no longer required. So if you are not happy with the software deployed with your camera, or if you no longer have access to it, then PTP-supported software (like IDimager) will still be able to read your images.
The downside of PTP, however, is that the technology doesn't allow some image formats to be transferred (like RAW files), you have to connect the camera to the computer every time you need to read the images, and generally transfering images from the camera is slower than transfering images from a memory card reader. For these reasons, IDimager recommends that you use a memory card reader to transfer images.
To download imags using a PTP connection, first make sure your camera is configured to connect through PTP. Read the manual of the camera on how to do this. Once set, connect the camera using the (USB) cable that is deployed with your camera. If IDimager was open at the moment you connected the camera, then it will detect that there is a new PTP device connected and ask you if you want to start the Downloader. If IDimager was not open yet, then start it now and click the button Download” in the main toolbar (or press [Ctrl]+[I]). If you started the Downloader yourself, then you’ll need to select the import type “PTP/WIA Connection” and click “Continue >>”.
Step 1: Select PTP/WIA Device
During the first step, you’ll need to select the PTP type and device that should be used. IDimager is able to read images from any PTP- or WIA-enabled device. This can be a digital camera, but also a scanner, a web cam, a digital video camcorder or any other PTP-enabled device. Select the type. In this case a digital camera is connected, so select this type. Then click the button “Select Device”. A new window opens where you can select the device from a list of all available devices of the earlier selected type.
The appearance of this window may be different on your computer, depending on your Windows version and language settings.
Once the device is selected, IDimager will connect to it right away. You can click the button
Then click “Continue >>” to skip to the next step.
Step 2: Select your photos
The appearance of this window may be different on your computer, depending on your Windows version and language settings.
Here you can select one or more images that are stored on the device. You can select images in the usual fashion by using either the mouse or keyboard shortcuts. In the toolbar there is also an option to select all.
After you made your selection, click “Continue >>” to skip to the next step.
Step 3: Select target location
At this point you enter the Downloader Wizard at step 3. Please refer to the chapter "Transfer images from a memory card" for a thorough description of steps 3 to 6 of the Downloader.
